Economic sanctions on Russia were attacked by China on Wednesday, with the country claiming that they were unlikely to resolve the Ukraine crisis and that they had the potential to affect ordinary people, as well as Beijing’s interests.

Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry, said at a routine news briefing on Wednesday that “sanctions have never been a fundamental and effective means to settle conflicts,” and that the country “always opposes any illegal unilateral sanctions.”
We can all think about it calmly,” she continued. “Since 2011, the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia more than 100 times,” she noted. “Have the sanctions imposed by the United States resolved the situation?”

In recent years, Russia has developed tight connections with China, a country whose massive domestic economy might serve as a bulwark against Western economic sanctions. The Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, met with Russian President Vladimir V. Putin during the Olympic Games in Beijing earlier this month, and the two leaders declared in a joint statement that their friendship had “no bounds.”
Nonetheless, China’s response to Mr. Putin’s actions against Ukraine this week was ambiguous, expressing neither condemnation nor support for his decision to recognize two separatist enclaves and order the deployment of soldiers in the country.

However, when it came to sanctions, China was vehemently opposed, warning against actions that could have far-reaching consequences. “The United States must ensure that the legitimate rights and interests of China and other parties are not jeopardized in the course of dealing with the Ukraine problem and relations with Russia,” Ms. Hua stated.
